What happens when the words won’t come

Column Post by Aj Luck

What happens when we go to write where it hurts but the words won’t come…when we sit silent, pen in hand, staring at a blank page, heart overflowing with a wrestling pain needing to get out yet unable to emerge?

Can we really trust ourselves to pen the pain we battle? Do we really trust that our Creator can be our secret keeper? Won’t He reject us, just like all the others?

I mean, what if HE REALLY KNEW?

Wouldn’t it be better to just keep it tucked deep down inside, safe from judgment and ridicule?

It’s scary.

By putting the words down, the dynamic of reality hits harder. Coming face to face, word by word they slice us open to a place of utter vulnerability. Exposed and ashamed, we want to hide but realize there is nowhere to go.

Writing where it hurts.

But what if we dismiss the gentle prompting to meet our Healer on the page? What if we choose to keep running, ignoring?

Simply put, the symptoms of our pain ooze out into our everyday lives while we fight to maintain an air of normalcy.

We pretend we are okay.

Every facet of our lives bears witness to our pain, yet we refuse to seek the very one who can heal us completely.

Again, we hide.

There is a truth that we all must consider.

The enemy of our souls makes it his continuous mission to accuse us day and night. The haunting whispers remind us of our mistakes and shortcomings, leaving us stifled in the silence of guilt and condemnation.

It is the ENEMY of our souls, not the CREATOR of our souls who accuses us.

Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say: “Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Messiah. For the accuser of our brothers and sisters, who accuses them before our God, day and night HAS BEEN HURLED DOWN. They triumphed over him by the blood of the lamb and by the WORD OF THEIR TESTIMONY.” Revelation 12:11

I encourage you to push past the lies, the fears, the condemnation. Put the pen to the blank page and purpose to find the healing that is rightfully yours.

Life is messy. Rarely, if ever, is it what we initially presume it to be.

We make mistakes.
We endure pain.
Sometimes we cause it.
We fail.
We fall.
We cry.
We weep.
We break.
We bruise.
We bleed.
We ache.
We struggle.
We question.
We doubt.
We fear.
We run.
We hide.

We are human.

Yet the very One who crafted us gently and precisely is far from human. He understands us more deeply than we will ever understand ourselves. He loves us without conditions or condemnation.

He is worthy of not only shouldering our pain, but embracing our deepest fears and secrets.

Write where it hurts today. Then embrace the healing that is sure to come.
